Asterisk is now in the larger banking environemnt

Wow, it's been a while since I had written anything....

Anywho ..... We just closed a banking IPPBX project. The bank has many branches throughout Malaysia and an overall of 2000+ users.

We've got back-end integration into the banking system and future planning of integrating Asterisk for automated self-help services for their customers using our very flexible IVR.

Christmas is around the corner

Is that time of the year again. A warm and nice feeling oozes through your body, listening to the beautiful X-Mas carols, with friends and family, kids playing, exchanging gifts, wine, turkey, ... hrmmm can't wait for the 24th December to arrive. Have a good festive season everyone!

A new chapter for Enterprise Infrastructure and Network Monitoring with Nagios

We made Nagios look sexy and cool. With over 4000 hosts to monitor, ranging from switches, routers, firewalls, load balancer to monitoring ISDN link status, RTA, IPSLA, performing backup and restore of configuration files, databases, various flavors of OS's from Windows, Linux, AIX, SUN OS.

Our customer requested for a unique management interface, where a GUI is created with static pre-defined templates with host specific information and service checks, a customized dashboard, extra functionality and a detailed reporting engine that can produce reports such as multiple host and a selection of services in a single report, multiple hosts and multiple services.

It took us around 4 months to get this up and running. Now Nagios is live and running as smooth as a road runner .. Beep Beep!

Yet another interesting day with Asterisk

I just sent out a proposal on Asterisk for a customer that requires a mobility solution for their internal users. What does this Cisco glorified definition mean? Simply this, a communication solution that allows users on mobile phones with SIP clients to connect back to their office IPPBX using either 3G or wireless internet (WIFI) connection.

This is quite interesting, as the solution design needs to take in, consideration of security, now no one wants to place an IPPBX out there without any protection, just imagine how many port scanners are running out there! We put in a routing server behind a firewall, which does SIP routing for authenticated phones.

With this solution, imagine the cost savings to and from international locations.

Just finished an interesting meeting with our business partner. We now have the ability to secure Asterisk, IP Phones, and many other components. Looks like this would be another giant leap for Intuit in IPPBX deployments.

How to Sell an Asterisk IPPBX solution, a sales person's guide

Ok, now after a long long time, I have decided to finally get something moving here. It's just been too long since I had the time and opportunity to write. We are looking at a Sales person's guide into selling Asterisk IPPBX, either for an office solution, call centre solution or specific components.

Firstly, we will concentrate on just a simple office solution, now this is further expanded into 2 to 3 categories.

a. Basic - With normal office requirements

b. Advance - With high availability and back end integration

c. Customized - With multiple locations, high availability and integration

Very likely, you will be confronted with 2 different scenario's. 1st scenario would be the easiest, a green field approach. All you need to do is understand the following information from your client:

1. Total amount of users

2. Total amount of incoming lines (analog or PRI)

3. Are there SIP trunks to low cost providers (pay attention to this as some of them will require specific codes for SIP trunks)

4. Features

Will all this basic information, now you would be able to cook up a really attractive proposal for your client.

An IMPORTANT point to remember: Do not cut down on hardware specifications to bring down the costs, as this will result in unwanted quality issues which will be time consuming and difficult to identify.

Finally.... Intuit is out with a new product ... we are a bunch of proud Intuiters with this new launch... something real cool ... a softphone that can work the way you want your softphone to work.

With full customization and cool features like passwords, central admin control, voice and video recording, just to name a few.

Internet Explorer 8

Well, hello again people. This is really something interesting. I recently upgraded my IE in Vista to version 8.

Turn on's:

1. The overall performance of my IE was really good.
2. Liked the privacy browsing
3. Loads much faster that the previous version and much faster than Mozilla.

Turn off's:

1. Slowed my computer down -- and I mean really slowed it!
2. Tried some of the fixes from the MS Support site -- with no results
3. Almost crashed my computer -- Luckily I had system restore activated


Morale:

You would think that simply upgrading Internet Explorer would not cause an issue -- note that the way the browser integrates with the OS is as if it is the OS. I would strongly encourage backing up all your files before trying to upgrade anything.

Best is to wait till the commercial version has been released --

Great Place for Dinner #1

Hi again, sorry for not updating my blog for sometime, just been plain busy. Well, recently, we had dinner at this really cool set up somewhere in Changkat Bukit Bintang. Its called Bermuda and Onion - Besides BOM BRAZIL.

This restaurant is for those of you that like to eat pork. They serve a variety of pork dishes, served Italian style. The chef is a very friendly and quite a hilarious chap.

The pricing there is not too expensive and the environment there is cozy. A good place to wine and dine.

I would definitely not recommend this place to my enemies :)

Vista Easter Egg

Before I share this information, I must tell you that I found this kewl thing while google-ing for some other stuff. Amazing eh? What you can find on the web!

Here we go!

1. Open dos prompt - Start-Run and type command
2. Goto the root of C:\ "you can do this by typing cd\ and hit enter
3. At the root, type edit "filename".bat - Filename ---> Replace it with what ever turns you on :)

Copy and paste the following

cd\
aurora.scr /p65552

4. Save the file
5. In windows explorer, search for the newly created file and copy it onto your desktop
6. Double click that file and see what happens - something really kewl
7. To exit "Press "Alt" + "F4" simultanoeusly without the + sign :)

Thus far; we managed to successfully implement any customization requirements from our customers. We have yet to find a particular request that we could not fulfill. If you have some strange idea of how you want to implement Asterisk or Nagios in your organization or a specific customized feature for your organization, bring this challenge to us.

We have integrated Nagios with various monitoring tools out there; and some of them are from the big boys -- Guess what? the customers have now replaced "the big boys" with Nagios -- Kewl no?

I just love it, customers love it. It's all about choices. It's all about the freedom to choose. It's all about what you want us to do for you -- something "the big boys" need to comprehend. Today's demanding economy no longer sees dictatorship from vendors to customers, but rather, a solution requirement that is customer driven!

Open source in general provides us with that platform. With its open architecture and framework, we can achieve what others refer to as "wish list"....

Asterisk: Password Reset via IVR

Something really cool in Asterisk - This is something an organization with LARGE number of users can use. You can now, get Asterisk to interface with AD or any applications, and get your users to reset passwords via the IVR. This means, the guys and girls at the help desk can concentrate in doing what they are paid for.

Well this solution is both secured and reliable. We have 2 customers that loved this solution. One is from the O&G industry and the other is from a Financial industry.

Imagine this .. you have an average of 2000 calls per month on password resets. Now all of such request can be handled by the IVR via Asterisk. Kewl no?
